How to check a file using SHA-256 checksum

Obtain a verification code for the file contents and compare it with the code from the sender.

File checksum: what to add → processing → what happens (TXT).

What to prepare

You can add: Files. The allowed size and number of files are indicated on the tool page.

Procedure

  1. Add files

Add a file. To check, find its SHA-256 on the sender's website or another source you trust.

  2. Select settings

To just receive the code, leave the expected amount field blank. For comparison, insert a code of 64 characters: numbers 0–9 and letters a–f. Large and small letters have no effect, spaces around the edges are removed.

  3. Click the button

Click “Calculate SHA-256” and wait until it’s ready. If an error appears, read the message and check the file, text, or settings.

  4. Save and check

Click "Download" on the finished result. Open checksum.txt. There will be a file code, and if you entered the expected code, will it match? If the codes are different, check whether the file is selected and whether the correct code is used for comparison.

Tool Options

Some fields appear after selecting a mode. The default settings are shown here; They are subject to change on the website.

Expected SHA-256

SHA-256 code for comparison: 64 characters of numbers 0–9 and letters a–f. An empty field only calculates the code of your file.

Default: Empty field

Good to know

SHA-256 is calculated from the file contents. Renaming a file or changing its filesystem date does not change the hash. Editing embedded metadata changes the file bytes and its hash. Matching hashes help verify a copy, but do not guarantee that it is free of viruses.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the processing performed?

The tool runs on your device, right in your browser. Files and entered text for this operation are not sent to the server.

What to do if the result is not suitable?

Take the original file or text and try other settings in the steps above. Compare the new result with the previous one. The original files on your device remain unchanged.
