How to change the encoding of a text file
Save the text file in a different encoding—the way letters are written within the file.
What to prepare
You can add: TXT, MD. The allowed size and number of files are indicated on the tool page.
Procedure
Add files
Add a TXT or Markdown file. Find out what encoding it is saved in. If you see strange characters instead of Russian letters, do not replace the original file.
Select settings
Select the encoding of the original file, then the encoding of the new one: UTF-8, UTF-16 LE, Windows-1251 or KOI8-R. If the first one is chosen incorrectly, the letters may not be read correctly.
Click the button
Click “Change encoding” and wait until it’s ready. If an error appears, read the message and check the file, text, or settings.
Save and check
Click "Download" on the finished result. Open the result in an editor with the selected output encoding. Check Russian letters and special characters compared to the original file.
Tool Options
Some fields appear after selecting a mode. The default settings are shown here; They are subject to change on the website.
- Source encoding
In what encoding, that is, in what way of writing letters, was the original file saved?
- Output encoding
What encoding to save the new text file in.
Good to know
Not every encoding contains all the necessary characters. If a character cannot be saved, the tool will report an error instead of silently replacing the letter.
